What supplies do you need to make a donkey costume at home?
I could also see through the eye holes but those didn’t give me a view of where I was stepping. The taped on pieces gave us a good general shape and then we did some of the finer details using a paper mache pulp. For the regular paper mache strips we just used newspaper, flour and water. How do you make the donkey nose?
I quite simply cut some strips out of an old cereal box and painted them grey. Once dry, then I stapled them together to make them longer, fitted it around the wearer’s head and stapled it together . I made ours for festival attire, but I can see that this could come in very handy for the Christmas nativity, Easter or any other donkey occasion. If your son is refusing to wear a skirt, they may settle for very baggy trousers with a robe over the top. Have your child wear sandals, or plimsolls if you don’t have anything suitable. Start by cutting out the donkey’s ears from the tan or light brown fabric. Cut two triangles that are approximately 6” tall and 3” wide at the base. Use face paint if you don't have a monkey mask. Start by applying a thin layer of tan face paint all over your face, indenting it on your cheeks for a classic monkey shape.
As with Mary, make the pillowcase into a simple tunic top. Make cuts down the sides for the arms to come through, and at the top for the head. If you don’t have any baggy trousers, increase the length of the tunic in the same way as for Mary’s costume. Stick or staple pieces of brown felt onto the old jumper to give the effect of the donkey’s coat.
Use the opening that you turned the tail inside out with to add foam, cotton, or newspaper. Try to stuff the tail as much as you can so that it looks stiff and puffy. Trim a 5 by 15 in piece of brown felt for the tail.
Cut two smaller rectangles out of the brown fabric for the donkey’s arms. Cut two long rectangles out of the brown fabric for the donkey’s legs. Cut four small rectangles out of the black fabric for the donkey’s hooves. Cut two long thin rectangles out of the black fabric for the donkey’s mouth. Cut two small rectangles out of the black fabric for the donkey’s nostrils. Attach the tail to the bottom of your shirt with a safety pin.
Make the pillowcase into a Mary tunic by cutting slits for the arms and the head. The Nativity is what Christmas is all about for our family. Each year we read the story as a family and act it out with the kids at least once. This should be approximately 2” tall and 1” wide. Cut two small circles out of the black fabric for the donkey’s eyes. These should be about 1” in diameter. Punch holes into two of the star points on each card, and tie ribbon from one star to the other, making a sandwich board effect. Cut both pieces into stars of equal sizes. Do be aware that your child may have to sit down at some point so don’t make the stars so big that this becomes difficult.
